2025 MVAL 70th Member Virtual Exhibit
“Beyond the Brush” – An Artful Reunion
Mid-Valley Arts League is fortunate to have as our venue this year the Millard Sheets Art Center and Gallery at Fairplex enabling us to return to a long-anticipated IN-PERSON exhibit. Fairplex has an active arts education program year-round in their historic building dedicated to an iconic local artist, Millard Sheets. What better place for Mid-Valley members to have An Artful Reunion?
Many thanks to Pam McGuern and all of her minions who did an awesome job putting this show together.

Judge Richard Scott on the judging the exhibit
How do you walk this exhibit and judge any painting as being “more deserving” of an award than another?
Here are three dirty little secrets about what it feels like to judge this art show:
Take heart – experience this exhibit as a “salon” in the classic sense: not as a competition, but as artists gathering together to share and celebrate the joy of making art – for its own sake. Each of you has added some beauty to the world.
I am grateful to you.
With love, Richard
How do you walk this exhibit and judge any painting as being “more deserving” of an award than another?
Here are three dirty little secrets about what it feels like to judge this art show:
- You are overwhelmed - The high level of craft on display here is exceptional – all paintings the result of beautiful minds engaged for hours making beautiful things. Such high skill on display! An inspiration.
- You are confused - Then tasked with selecting awards, you realize in most cases that you’re stuck trying to decide between several (and sometimes many) artworks that you appreciate and enjoy for different reasons. Most of the works in this show were on the verge of winning an award.
- You cringe, then make a choice - As a judge you realize that what you deem “award worthy” is based on two things:
- The Category Awards were ultimately chosen based on the judge's own personal taste, which is subjective, and
- The Tribute Awards were selected based on what the judge deemed to be “in the spirit” of the namesake of that award, which is also subjective
Take heart – experience this exhibit as a “salon” in the classic sense: not as a competition, but as artists gathering together to share and celebrate the joy of making art – for its own sake. Each of you has added some beauty to the world.
I am grateful to you.
With love, Richard
