April Monthly Meeting - April 19thShe is inspired by the California’s vernacular architecture, landscape, and garden paintings. Aspects of Tonalism and Impressionism have been integrated into her watercolor, and oil paintings. Lord’s paintings can be seen in galleries, invitational, and juried shows. Magazine articles and podcasts highlight her working methods and career.
Southern California native, Carolyn Lord (1956- ) was introduced to the California Regionalist Watercolor Tradition by James Green while attending Principia College in Elsah, IL. A Studio Arts Major, her Liberal Arts studies also included botany and architectural history, which became favorite painting motifs. Art of the Month for April will be online only with the theme of View From Above. Submit art by noon, Tuesday, April 18 to crisgordywatercolors@gmail.com.

Alhambra City Hall Gallery Theme: "In Awe of Nature" April 3 - 27, 2023 Monrovia Association of Fine Arts. We’d like to invite all MVAL fine artists and chalk artists to join us for our 61st Art in the Park Show and Chalkfest on October 7 in Monrovia Library Park from 10am to 4 pm. Carolyn Lord - Plein Air Workshop – Water Media Workshop
This 3-day workshop by renowned watercolorist Carolyn Lord will begin indoors, with presentations on how to organize the watercolor palette; pigment quality; etc.
On the first day, after lunch, we will go outside in the garden for a painting demonstration with ideas on drawing and composition; painting strategies; interpreting complex motifs; importance of silhouettes; division between light and shadow.
The second day will be in the garden and the workshop attendees will paint all day, while the instructor provides individualized attention.
The third day is in the garden, with attendees painting in the morning and receiving individualized attention. After lunch there will be a final painting demonstration.
Carolyn’s presentation to MVAL members prior to the workshop will be on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, 7:30 PM – 9 PM. This talk may be attended on-site or through Zoom. Detailed information for this presentation will be sent to MVAL members amd registered workshop attendees. In this talk, Carolyn will cover composition, color, values, with numerous examples of her drawings, watercolors, and oils. There will be no demo.
